Domestic Territories

Domestic Territories is an ongoing design research on new relations, spaces, and forms of encounter between humans, (other) animals, plants and minerals.

Domestic Territories proposes to look at the novel ecosystem of Rotterdam’s Maasvlakte—a vast man-made extension to the city’s port—as both a drawing board for the city to imagine its future, and a testament of the transformative power humans exercise on the earth’s surface.

Domestic Territories asks: When usual definitions of natural and artificial are of no aid, and when forms of interior and exterior collide, what kind of “domestic” can we imagine? Which relations can we design for? Which materials and spaces can embody and enable new relations between people, plants, and other forms of life? If this is our “future land”, what kind of domus do we want it to become?
